Is all this socializing really worth it?
Written by Trish - August 16, 2008 1 CommentI have come late to the social networking, marketing, Web 2.0 thing. I would like to say that my slowness has been purposeful, but that would be me trying to sound smarter than I am.
I had other stuff going on…that’s the truth. My attention was on work, the break up of my marriage (an amicable one, so don’t be sad!), and the move and settling in to my new house. Plus, I couldn’t see what I would get out of spending a chunk of my day dealing with LinkIn, Facebook, and whatever other social network rises to the surface.
I did a great workshop in July that covered (among other things) network science. I came away with a new understanding of why including all this social stuff in my day was important. In particular, I have an appreciation for the "strength of the weak tie," which supports the cultivation of what are considered "mere acquaintances" because of the value that their networks have to offer.
So I have now made time in my day for social networking. I’ll keep you posted on results as they come in…

I’ve joined Facebook, LinkedIn and a couple other social networking sites. I’ve tried to get involved without letting them consume my life.
The results so far? Some good stuff. But probably more time “wasted.” Lots of distractions that aren’t really enriching my life. But the good parts keep me going.
