What does your rate say about you?

Written by Trish - February 5, 2009 2 Comments

maskNo, really. I’m asking.

You have an hourly rate that you arrive at through some kind of methodology, right?

So what I want to know is … what else besides a number does your rate communicate to your prospects and clients?

Does it communicate business value? Expertise? Reliability? Something else?

I do believe that people use rates to make fast judgements about freelancers–judgements that extend beyond just what the price is going to be. I’d like to see what you think about this…do you find that prospects react to or interract with you in a particular way because of your rate? If so, how…and why?

This inquiring mind would love to know!!!

I’ve flip flopped between hourly rates and per project rates. I feel my rate communicates my worth, but do prospective clients see that when talking or emailing with me? I know my level of expertise and my value. But I am pretty sure I just haven’t broken through to those potentials that will truly understand, value and appreciate my rate and the quality of work and partnership that comes with it.

I think it is all about the image you make for yourself. Confidence is key.
But the price should (honestly) reflect quality and expertise.

That’s what I believe clients see with your rate, but sometimes that mirror is a little foggy.
