Listen to the show

If you own a business, work from home, want to stay solo, and are looking for big success, you are likely reading a lot and at least toying with the idea of participating in classes, workshops or whatever program seems likely to add to your business building knowledge base.

There is a lot of great advice rolling around out there. And a chunk of it focuses on how we need to organize to be successful. To work on our businesses instead of in them.

There’s a little something that needs to be in place to pull this organization stuff off. It’s the big D, discipline. Being able to focus on a task and get it done, then focus on the next task and get that one, and so on.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being terrible and 10 being borderline obsessive compulsive, where are you when it comes to discipline. If you are like many solo home business owners, you are lucky to be at 5.

  • Quick Biz TipDo the “two timer” trick the next time you want to bear down and get super-productive. Set the first timer for an hour, work until it goes off. Set the second timer for 20 minutes, and take a break till that goes off. Rinse, repeat as many times as necessary. This helps you concentrate on your work and get the break you need, and also ensures that your break doesn’t “creep” too much!
  • Resource SpotlightForgot to mention this on the show. It’s a free online stopwatch to help you count down minutes for the “two time” trick.http://www.online-stopwatch.com/
  • Networking RecommendationA good business pal, another solo home business owner.  Work with each other on an accountability day so that both of you get something big done. Take a chunk of time, call each other at the start of that chunk, and make a commitment for what you’ll accomplish in the next hour. Hang up, go to work, and call back at the end of an hour. Report results, make another commitment for the next hour, and get to work. Follow that same process through the chunk of time you’ve set aside. You’ll be amazed at what you accomplish!
