About Me

The year was 1994. Early spring. I got off the plane in San Diego with 2 duffel bags and $1,000 in cash.

That was the sum total of my estate.

Not bad, I suppose, if I was a student. Or a returning Peace Corps volunteer. But I was neither of those. I was a woman pushing middle age who was returning from what was supposed to have been an indefinite sailboat cruise—something my husband and I had taken years to plan and prepare for. We had both cut all land ties to embrace this new lifestyle.

It never occurred to me that the things could go south and I could end up back in the States, alone, with pretty close to nothing.

Things were really grim then.

Today I own two houses—one I live in and one I rent out. The house where I live is the real-life version of the “dream house” I envisioned as a young adult. I have a 6-figure retirement account, health insurance, and a lot more than $1,000 in the bank. And I own my own 6-figure home business.

Things are great now.

My journey from zero to 6 figures was a big learning experience. I discovered a lot about myself and what it takes to go for—and get—big goals. Some of the things I’ve learned are circumstance-independent. Things like:

  • Know what you’re shooting for. Not a detailed plan, but a mental picture of where you want to be in life.
  • Trust your intuition. Heed the “go” and “stop” alerts in your head.
  • Have your “opportunity” radar on. Stay open to unexpected avenues to make progress.
  • Don’t let the bastards get you down. Things will work sometimes and not work at others. Weather the unworkable times without losing sight of your goals.
  • Don’t try to control the process. Allow things to unfold without devoting a lot of energy to making them go a certain way.

I learned a lot more, but the bottom line is this: I put one foot in front of the other, every day, every day, every day, to get from there to here.

Now I’m all about helping people take a lot less time than I did to get to the life of their dreams.
