[...] Remembering How to Relax – Leaving work behind can be tough at times. . How effective can you truly be if you’re tired, stressed and your family is not speaking to you? Just one of the many great points in this read. I recommend this to everyone, not just business owners. [...]

Good points Thomas...it IS important for a freelancer to be realistic about the value they bring to the market and charge accordingly. In plain English, I mean that it's important to clearly understand how much experience and skill one brings to the job and set the price to match that.

And about the passion...right again. Except that if the passion isn't there, it's not a good idea to continue. Find the line of work or service that DOES excite, energize, and inspire. These days, passion isn't a "nice to have" thing in one's business--it is IMPERATIVE.

Thanks Thomas!

"Another reason may be that they’re doing work that they’re not fully qualified to do, or they are not passionate about the work that they do, and so it takes them much longer than it should to create deliverables.

Unlike an employer, a client can’t be expected to, and typically won’t pay more for their work products because they take longer to produce."

Sorry.. don't mean to SPAM but I accidentally fired off my comments anonymously; I'm repeating them here with an identity.

You're absolutely on target--none of us have time to simply coast in our jobs any longer. If we aren't creating something meaningful with all those hours, why are we there? In a time of national crisis, it seems to me that innovation and creativity, rather than corporate conformity, should be most highly rewarded. That doesn't, however, seem to be the case.

Although it's truly been a struggle to live "free", spending an hour in corporate America has me looking for the exits. Thanks for your usual insightful comments.

I think it is all about the image you make for yourself. Confidence is key.
But the price should (honestly) reflect quality and expertise.

That's what I believe clients see with your rate, but sometimes that mirror is a little foggy.

I've flip flopped between hourly rates and per project rates. I feel my rate communicates my worth, but do prospective clients see that when talking or emailing with me? I know my level of expertise and my value. But I am pretty sure I just haven't broken through to those potentials that will truly understand, value and appreciate my rate and the quality of work and partnership that comes with it.
